Factors Affecting Suicidal Ideation of the Old

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of demographic factors, depression, frequency of drinking, duration of illness, self-esteem, social relation satisfaction, family relationship satisfaction on suicidal ideation. This study used sample data of 4,956 household members over 65 years old for the final analysis using the 12th merged data from KOWEPS 2017. In this study, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS 19.0 statistical package. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the older men, the higher the level of depression, the longer the duration of chronic disease, the older the group without religion, the older, the group with low self-esteem and low family relationship and social relation satisfaction were higher the suicidal ideation. Second, depression had the highest correlation with the old-old, and self-esteem was the most significant variable affecting depression. Third, in the difference between the old-old and young-old, the old-old was higher in depression, longer in chronic disease, and higher in suicidal ideation, but lower in self-esteem, social relationship satisfaction, family relationship satisfaction, and frequency of drinking. Based on these results, various measures to reduce the suicidal ideation of the old were discussed.
